April Team Letter from Revd. Richard Henderson

Posted on by Tania Birtwistle

Easter is a time when we celebrate the triumph of life over death, the triumph of God over sin, and the reality of Christ’s risen life in us. We prepare for Easter by taking stock of where we are spiritually, emotionally and mentally. I want also to suggest that this spiritual journey we are on in Lent, through Holy Week and in the joy of Easter Day can have a practical out working.

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
    and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
    and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

End Hunger Fast

This national campaign is one which challenges me, as I seek with others to champion the work of the Foodbank locally. (Thank you to all who regularly give at our local collection points). Foodbanks these days are found everywhere and make the news on a regular basis. Their existence begs many questions of our government, our society and us. The Endhungerfast campaign states that,’ No one should go hungry in Britain’, but half a million people used food banks in the last year.

They go on to say that ‘Charitable support programmes are rapidly expanding but nonetheless a quarter of families are shrinking portion sizes and 5,500 people were admitted to hospital for malnutrition last year. More and more people are just one unexpected bill away from facing bare cupboards. This is a national and moral crisis and government must act to protect the half a million going hungry in Britain.’

We can all make a difference by engaging in this campaign, and call on the government to ensure:

• That the welfare system provides a robust last line of defence against hunger in Britain

• That work pays enough for working people to properly provide for their families

• That food markets function, promoting long term sustainable and healthy diets with no one profiteering off hunger in Britain.

On Thursday 3rd April, St.Margaret’s Reydon will be open for a fluid time of prayer from 6-8pm. Prayer notes and further information will be available on the night, so come for whatever length of time works for you.

There will be a NATIONAL FAST DAY ON FRIDAY 4th APRIL and various other ways in which we can show our support to those in need. Further details on how you can make a difference can be found at www.endhungerfast.co.uk.

As we journey towards Easter focusing on the love of the cross and power of the resurrection we can respond in faithful loving service. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. Acts 4:33.

We are blessed to be a blessing!
